RAV4 generations and clean air zones

The oldest Toyota RAV4 cars are now around 26 years old. Age matters when you are deciding whether to keep one, because older cars are the ones most likely to fall short of London's ULEZ and the clean air zones in other cities, where a non-compliant vehicle pays a daily charge.

Rule of thumb only: petrol cars generally meet the standard from 2006 (many from 2001), diesels from September 2015. Hybrids follow their petrol engine. Check your registration with the TfL vehicle checker, and see what to do with a non-compliant car.

What a scrap Toyota RAV4 is worth

The starting point for any scrap valuation is weight: a RAV4 weighs roughly 1.30 tonnes to 1.95 tonnes, most of it steel. On top of that, the collection company looks at which parts can be reused or sold on, the car's condition, and whether anything is missing.

  • Catalytic converter: it contains precious metals and is part of the value. Say if it has been removed or stolen.
  • Working parts: an engine, gearbox, panels or lights that are in demand for other RAV4 owners can add value even when the car itself is not worth repairing.
  • Condition and completeness: missing wheels, a removed engine or heavy damage reduce the value, so describe the car accurately when you enquire.

Scrapping a hybrid RAV4

Hybrid and electric versions have a high-voltage battery that must be removed and handled by trained staff at an authorised treatment facility. Do not try to disconnect or remove it yourself. Paperwork for scrapping your car

  1. Check you can scrap it. If there is finance outstanding, it must be settled first — scrapping a car on finance.
  2. Keep your number plate if you want it. A private registration has to be taken off before the car is scrapped — how to keep it.
  3. Have the V5C and ID ready. No log book? You can still scrap it.
  4. Tell DVLA. The keeper must tell DVLA the vehicle has gone to an authorised treatment facility, or risk being fined £1,000 (GOV.UK). Any full months of tax left are refunded — how to tell DVLA.
  5. Keep the Certificate of Destruction. It proves the car was scrapped — what it is.

  • The collection company values the vehicle, collects it free of charge and pays you on collection, in line with the terms you agree with them.
  • If the vehicle is completely scrapped, that happens at an authorised treatment facility (ATF), which gives you a Certificate of Destruction. A vehicle that is repaired and resold instead does not get one.
