Vans accepted

Light commercial vans are accepted for a valuation in any condition, including:

  • small and medium panel vans;
  • large panel vans and high-roof vans;
  • Luton and box vans;
  • pickups, dropside and tipper vans.

Tell us the van's size and gross weight when you enquire, especially for larger vehicles. Collection needs a recovery vehicle that can carry it, and some rules change above 3.5 tonnes (see paperwork). If you are scrapping a car instead, see cars we accept.

Vans that don't run

A van does not need to start or drive to be collected, because it is loaded onto a recovery vehicle. Engine, gearbox, clutch and electrical failures are all common reasons vans are scrapped. Say whether the van rolls and steers, and whether it is loaded or empty. More detail: non-running and mechanical failure vehicles.

Vans that have failed their MOT

Vans up to 3,500kg design gross weight need an MOT. Heavier goods vehicles have an annual test instead (GOV.UK: MOT classes). A van does not need a valid MOT to be collected, but without one it cannot be driven or parked on the road except to be repaired or to a booked test. Keep it off the road until collection. Accident-damaged vans

Damaged vans are valued on the parts and materials that can still be used. If the van was written off by an insurer, give the category when you enquire. See accident damaged vehicles.

What affects a van valuation

A person at the collection company covering your area values the van from the details you give. The main factors are:

  • size and weight, because larger vans contain more metal;
  • make, model and age, and whether its parts are in demand;
  • reusable parts, such as the engine, gearbox, panels and catalytic converter, if fitted;
  • condition, including damage, mechanical faults and missing parts;
  • racking, shelving or conversions: mention these, and remove anything you want to keep.

Free collection

Collection is free. Once you accept the valuation, you agree a time with the collection company. Mention access restrictions such as height barriers, narrow entrances or a van parked at a business yard. See free collection.

Paperwork and DVLA

  • V5C:give it to the facility that scraps the van, and keep the yellow ‘sell, transfer or part-exchange your vehicle to the motor trade’ section.
  • Business-owned vans: if the van is registered to a business, the person arranging the sale must be authorised to sell it. Waste rules for vehicles owned by a business can differ from those for private vehicles (GOV.UK: when a motor vehicle is waste).
  • Telling DVLA: the registered keeper must tell DVLA the van has gone to an authorised treatment facility. GOV.UK says you can be fined £1,000 if you do not.
  • Finance or lease: tell the collection company about any outstanding finance or hire agreement. It remains your responsibility.

Certificate of Destruction

If a light van is completely scrapped at an authorised treatment facility, you receive a Certificate of Destruction within 7 days. Certificates are issued for cars, light vans and three-wheeled vehicles. GOV.UK says other types of vehicle do not get one, so a heavier van may not (where you can scrap your vehicle). No certificate is issued if the van is repaired and sold rather than scrapped.

  • The collection company values the vehicle, collects it free of charge and pays you on collection, in line with the terms you agree with them.
  • If the vehicle is completely scrapped, that happens at an authorised treatment facility (ATF), which gives you a Certificate of Destruction. A vehicle that is repaired and resold instead does not get one.
