Scrap My Volkswagen Transporter

A medium van, also the base of the California camper and many UK conversions.

Every Volkswagen Transporter is accepted for a free valuation, whatever its age or condition — including vans that have failed an MOT, will not start or have been damaged. This page covers what affects the value of a Transporter, which versions meet clean air zone standards and the paperwork for scrapping one.

Transporter generations and clean air zones

The oldest Volkswagen Transporter vans are now around 36 years old. Age matters when you are deciding whether to keep one, because older vans are the ones most likely to fall short of London's ULEZ and the clean air zones in other cities, where a non-compliant vehicle pays a daily charge.

GenerationYearsdiesel ULEZ
T4Front-engined, front-wheel drive1990–2003Usually not compliant

T62015–2019Depends on the car — check
T6.12019–2024Usually compliant

Rule of thumb only: petrol vans generally meet the standard from 2006 (many from 2001), diesels from September 2015. Hybrids follow their petrol engine. Check your registration with the TfL vehicle checker, and see what to do with a non-compliant car.

What a scrap Volkswagen Transporter is worth

The starting point for any scrap valuation is weight: a Transporter weighs roughly 1.65 tonnes to 2.20 tonnes, most of it steel. On top of that, the collection company looks at which parts can be reused or sold on, the van's condition, and whether anything is missing.

To put a figure on it, enter a Transporter's weight and a price per tonne in the scrap car value calculator — it fills in the typical Transporter weight for you.

  • Catalytic converter: it contains precious metals and is part of the value. Say if it has been removed or stolen.
  • Working parts: an engine, gearbox, panels or lights that are in demand for other Transporter owners can add value even when the van itself is not worth repairing.
  • Condition and completeness: missing wheels, a removed engine or heavy damage reduce the value, so describe the van accurately when you enquire.

The valuation is given ‘subject to contract’ and confirmed when the van is inspected on collection. More on how scrap value is worked out and scrap car prices.

Transporter known issues and recalls

Owners usually decide to scrap when a repair would cost more than the van is worth. These are well documented for the Transporter; you can check any van's outstanding recalls on GOV.UK:

  • Diesels with the EA189 1.2, 1.6 and 2.0 TDI engine (roughly 2009–2015) were recalled in the 2015 Volkswagen Group emissions case for a software update.

If yours has failed its MOT or has a mechanical fault, see scrapping an MOT failure, non-running cars and whether to scrap or sell.

Scrapping a Transporter van

Vans are collected and valued the same way as cars. Empty the load area before collection, and mention any racking, a tow bar or conversion work. More on scrapping a van.

Paperwork for scrapping your car

  1. Check you can scrap it. If there is finance outstanding, it must be settled first — scrapping a car on finance.
  2. Keep your number plate if you want it. A private registration has to be taken off before the car is scrapped — how to keep it.
  3. Have the V5C and ID ready. No log book? You can still scrap it.
  4. Tell DVLA. The keeper must tell DVLA the vehicle has gone to an authorised treatment facility, or risk being fined £1,000 (GOV.UK). Any full months of tax left are refunded — how to tell DVLA.
  5. Keep the Certificate of Destruction. It proves the van was scrapped — what it is.

Who does what

  • Scrap A Car For Cash (operated by Lead Stack Ltd, company number 15877625) takes your enquiry and passes it to an affiliated vehicle collection company that covers your area.
  • The collection company values the vehicle, collects it free of charge and pays you on collection, in line with the terms you agree with them.
  • If the vehicle is completely scrapped, that happens at an authorised treatment facility (ATF), which gives you a Certificate of Destruction. A vehicle that is repaired and resold instead does not get one.
